‘Royal Style in the Making’ is an exhibition at Kensington Palace showcasing over 60 years of royal fashion, worn by the palace’s most famous inhabitants: the Queen, Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales. It explores the intimate relationship and collaboration between fashion designer and royal client.
The exhibition also throws a spotlight on two wedding dresses: the drawings and correspondence behind the Queen’s wedding dress by Norman Hartnell, and Princess Diana’s fairytale wedding dress by the Emmanuel’s, which is on loan to this exhibition.
We are all overly familiar with Princess Diana’s wedding dress, but nothing will prepare you for the moment you see it face to face; with its 25’ train, lavish frills, wide lace collar glittering with sequins and 10,000 pearls. This wedding gown is as majestic as it is spectacular.
The exhibition also includes never seen before items from the royal archives: such as sketches, fabrics, swatches and hand-written notes from the royals, giving visitors a sneak peek into the ateliers of famous designers and the mindset and input of their glamorous royal clientele.
