- Guests: if your child is under the age of 4, follow the ‘age plus one’ rule. After the age of 4, most children tend to want a larger party and generally are expected to invite the whole class.
- Invitations: children should be encouraged to design and write the invitations themselves. Anticipation is half the fun!
- Food: make sure that you have friendly food for all the guest types: kids, family, friends and parents. Be mindful of food allergies and intolerances; have dairy-free and gluten-free options available, avoiding nuts at all costs, as allergies to them tend to be life-threatening.
- Party duration: children’s parties should last no longer than 2 hours; drop-off and pick-up times must be indicated on the invitations, and parents are expected to be on time for both.
- Gifts: accept all gifts graciously. Opening gifts at a children’s party can seriously cut into party time, so it is best avoided. Focus on the activities and spending time with guests instead.
- Thank-you notes: this is an important skill to be instilled in children of all ages. If children are too young help them write the notes, and if they are a bit older, make sure they get done.
- Gift bags: go for environmentally friendly and useful gifts; such as art supplies, puzzles and books. Avoid single-use plastic gifts and toys.
- Putting everyone at ease; and making sure everybody is having fun are necessary skills for a perfect host, creating a hassle-free, enjoyable and memorable party for all!
